Today at Bickerton, like most days, only the larger herd of six was to be found. Most of the time the ponies are pretty docile towards each other but today was a different story; Shy, the oldest and not seen in any of the photos below, had distanced herself from the group although was still seen as "part of the herd" and had not been chased away. I waited longer than usual, as I thought she may have been ill or had an injury so wanted to be sure she was fine, Shy was just content to graze the heather and didn't pay me any attention as she casually went about her business...she was fine, the rest on the other hand were not!

Taff and Sam (before the fight) behind Mist |
Taff had started kicking out at Sam, something which you'd expect in time with Sam being the only other male in the herd, to which Ellie became spooked and started her high-pitched neighing which sounds more like a bleating sheep than a horse. The chaos ended in less than a minute, after which Shy returned to the main herd and they all ran off back into the birch woodland.

Fflach |
Fflach is looking VERY big; as the ponies are still practically wild it would cause too much stress to get a vet in to check for certain so it's just a case of watching and waiting. I doubt, if she is in foal, that it will be born before I leave, but we'll see.

Mist |
As well as the ponies there are still a number of butterflies and other insects worth photographing:

Gatekeeper (Male) |
Not 100% sure but I'm thinking green-veined white, correct me if I'm wrong. |
Gatekeeper (Female) |
Six-spot ladybird next to a bilberry. |
Hover fly |
Bumblebee |
Still haven't got my Jay but here's a nice shot of a crow instead. |
Bessie still has fun chasing me up and down the heathland! |
